Enjoy the laugh-out-loud first story in New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Erica Ridley’s fan-favorite Dukes of War regency romance series!

Certain individuals might consider Lady Amelia Pembroke a managing sort of female, but truly, most people would be lost without her help. Why, the latest on-dit is that rakish Viscount Sheffield is canceling the fete of the year because he hasn't time for silly soirees. He doesn't need time—he needs her!

When a flash of lightning destroys the venue for his family's annual Christmas ball, Lord Benedict Sheffield intends to enjoy a relaxing holiday for once. But after twelve days of beguiling Lady Amelia's guerrilla tactics, he's up to his cravat with tinsel... and tumbling head over heels in love.

The Viscount Tempting Minx A Regency Romance Novella Dukes of War Book 1 edition by Erica Ridley Literature Fiction eBooks

The book has a simple plot with characters that have completely unmatched personalities. Yes, opposites attract. But they will be totally incompatible once the excitement and newness wears off. This is too obvious to make the book enjoyable. The worst problem is that it isn't historically accurate as to how people of this time period would behave. Even an older woman of 29, who doesn't need a chaperone, still couldn't be spending every day for a week or more with an unmarried man with a reputation as a rake without raising eyebrows and causing scandal. And she's not the risk taking type. The worst thing is *spoiler alert* when the Viscount is passionately kissing her with their bodies pressed together and her brother, a duke, catches them and acts like it's no big deal and just says the equivalent of "hey" and walks off. At this time period, he would have either insisted the viscount marry her or he would have at least been really upset. So, the book didn't feel at all realistic. The heroine also corrects the viscount for saying "memory shelf" when he doesn't say they phrase; this seems to be an error in editing. All in all, it's not the worst book I've read. It's just that it's very two dimensional because it's so unrealistic and the characters simply drawn.

The Viscount Tempting Minx A Regency Romance Novella Dukes of War Book 1 edition by Erica Ridley Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

First, the book is SHORT. Really SHORT. It is a novella, but still. Really short. Neither character is all that interesting. The female lead is such a boring bluenose whose sole purpose in life is to be prepared. She probably invents the boy scouts in a future version of the book. The Viscount believes in fun for 12 hours a day and business the other 12. Not sure which sleep falls under. As soon as he meets this woman who has determined that a ball should be thrown so that she can find a husband, he decides mistresses and drinking are not nearly as intriguing as the woman who would put Mary Poppins to shame with her efficiency. They go to 3 venues, and by the 20th page the decide to get married. Yeah, it's a romance story, so no shock there, but really? Snow lasts longer in Georgia than their courtship took. The characters were very two dimensional and very boring. Not even worthy of the label "Fluff."
This was my first Erica Ridley story, and won't be my last. It was a short, fun, funny, and sweet tale of two seemingly opposite people coming together who are quite perfect for one another.

This story focuses on Lady Amelia and the Viscount Sheffield. The lady is always analyzing and maneuvering others, for their benefit of course. She never stops to just have fun, but she is kind and considerate, and always thoughtful as she pushes to have things done her way. The Viscount, on the other hand, likes things done his own way and has never met a woman quite as determined as her. He understands the lady quickly, and that helps him as he becomes a reformed rake. They have their moments of witty banter over the course of two weeks, and they both intrigue one another in ways never done before. Despite the fact that this was a sweet romance, the couple definitely had plenty of chemistry as they spoke and tried to out maneuver the other.

Overall I really loved this book! It was short and sweet, a great Christmas themed read. You learn just enough of the lady to really like and admire her, but not as much as I would hope from the Viscount. The romance was great, as was the overall pacing and editing of the story. If you like sweet, short historical romance, this story is definitely for you!
The Viscount’s Christmas Temptation Dukes of War Book 1 is by Erica Ridley. This is a delightful short romance. It is a regency novel set in London.
Lady Amelia Pembroke is a very organized lady. She has organized her life and her brother’s so that there were very rarely any surprises. She always had a backup plan. Now, she had decided it is time for her to marry. She needs to get out of her brother’s house so he can find someone to marry and not feel he is kicking her out of her home. She decides to check Debrett’s Peerage to find someone of her class to marry. Then, she intends to meet him at the Sheffield’s seventy-fifth annual Christmas Eve ball. When she tells her brother about it, he tells her that there will not be a Christmas Eve ball this year because the venue where it was held had burned down. She immediately stated there must be a different venue because the Ball must go on. She has twelve days to convince the Viscount to hold the ball, to find a venue, orchestra, decorations, chefs, and send out hand written invitations. She has no time to waste, she must see the Viscount immediately.
Benedict St. John, Viscount Sheffield led a very regimented life. He does not have time for a wife. From eight in the morning to eight at night, he focuses on business. From eight in the evening to eight in the morning, he focuses on fun. He religiously keeps to his regime. Then, one day, his schedule is broken into by the appearance of Lady Amelia Pembroke on his doorstep. His life will never be the same.
Will Amelia be able to talk Benedict into having the ball and will she be able to get everything arranged in time?
This is a cute book and it is fun to read.
